Prof. Dr. Dr. Eberhard Stüber wurde 1927 geboren und feiert heuer seinen 98. Geburtstag.
Er studierte in Innsbruck Naturgeschichte und Geografie und begann bereits 1946 seine Mitarbeit am Haus der Natur Salzburg, dessen Direktor er ab 1976 wurde. 1952 gründete Stüber die Österreichische Naturschutzjugend und war maßgeblich an der Entstehung des Nationalparks Hohe Tauern beteiligt – durch dessen Herzstück heute die Großglockner Hochalpenstraße führt.

Man kann sagen: Er hat sein Leben dem Naturschutz gewidmet. Und wie wir in diesem Gespräch erfahren, ist das Thema Naturschutz nicht erst in den letzten Jahren aktuell geworden – schon Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts wurde...

Mit dieser Leidenschaft spricht Peter Suntinger, ehemaliger Mitarbeiter der GROHAG, Bergführer, Mitglied der Lawinenkommission und der Bergrettung, über „seine“ Straße.

Peter Suntinger ist ein echtes Heiligenbluter Original – aufgewachsen mit Blick auf den Großglockner, eng verbunden mit den Bergen, den Menschen und besonders mit der Straße. Über Jahrzehnte war die Großglockner Hochalpenstraße nicht nur sein Arbeitsplatz, sondern seine Bühne, sein Rückzugsort und sein Zuhause.

In dieser Folge treffen wir Peter Rupitsch, den langjährigen Geschäftsführer des Nationalparks Hohe Tauern.
Er zeigt uns, warum die Großglockner Hochalpenstraße weit mehr ist als eine beeindruckende Gebirgsstraße: Sie ist ein Erlebnisweg mitten durch die Natur – und ein Zugang zu einer der faszinierendsten Landschaften Europas.

Peter Rupitsch erzählt, wie sich das Naturverständnis in den letzten Jahrzehnten verändert hat, warum gerade heute der bewusste Zugang zur Natur so wichtig ist – und weshalb es sich lohnt, sich einen ganzen Tag Zeit zu nehmen, um die Großglocknerstraße in ihrer ganzen Vielfalt zu erleben.

In this episode, we discuss the Pass Sanctuary Hochtor, which also has an exhibition at the south portal, on the Carinthian side of the Hochtor. The exhibition invites you on a time journey through three and a half millennia, during which the Glockner crossing was the shortest trade route between Germany in the north and the world trade center Venice in the south.

In today's episode, our host Max Kögl meets the two curators of the exhibition "Construction of the Road" in the road keeper's house at Fuscher Lacke. Sibylle Kampl and Andreas Zangl guide the listeners through the exhibition and talk about the two visionaries Franz Rehrl & Franz Wallack and their motivations for realizing the Großglockner High Alpine Road; But also about the difficult working conditions in the high mountains and in times of economic crisis.

On a hike in the Hohe Tauern National Park with national park ranger Konrad Mariacher. With an area of 1,856 km², the Hohe Tauern National Park is the largest national park in the entire Alpine region and one of the largest protected areas in Central Europe.
Today our host Max Kögl will be given a short tour by Konrad along the hiking trail from the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe to the Wilhelm-Swarovski viewing platform.

Together we will walk through the various rooms of the exhibition and hear what prejudices the first Alpine pioneers had to struggle with and what dangers they faced due to the clothing conventions that were appropriate for their status but unsuitable for climbing and what drove the women to become summiteers despite all the resistance.
